Want to try some kayaking or rock climbing? Maybe you’d like your kids to learn to read a map and tie knots. You can experience all of this and much more at the 2023 NATR Fest, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Point Mallard Park in Decatur. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online or at the festival. For children 12 and under, admission is free.

Hosted by the nonprofit group North Alabama Trails and Recreation, the family friendly festival offers adults and kids opportunities to try outdoor activities and learn more about recreation opportunities in North Alabama.

During the event, attendees can participate in a wide range of activities, including kayaking, paddleboarding, mountain biking, archery and rock climbing. There will also be interesting demonstrations, such as a raptor show and cross-cut saw demo.

NATR Fest is intended to be an event for the whole family and includes several activities for kids, including opportunities to learn to read a map, tie knots and create water cycle bracelets.

The festival also includes at least 60 exhibiting organizations and companies offering products and information to help locals explore the outdoors in North Alabama. You can visit with members of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society, learn about Land Trust of North Alabama nature preserves, talk with personnel from local tourism bureaus, and even pick up copies of trail maps and guidebooks, like “Hiking Huntsville.”

Because a day of adventure is sure to build up an appetite, several food vendors will be at the festival, including Sistaz N Town, The Round Table, Teresita's Tamales, Big Daddy Farm, and Snow Kone Factory.

For more information on the festival, visit natrails.org and the North Alabama Trails and Recreation Facebook page.
