The Land Trust of North Alabama announced plans to create a new greenway trail on Monte Sano Mountain. The Tollgate Greenway will be a paved multi-use path that follows the route of the historic Toll Gate Road. It will run from the Land Trust’s Bankhead Trailhead parking lot to the closed section of Bankhead Parkway in Monte Sano State Park.
“This new path will provide pedestrians and bikers a safe, scenic route to travel on the western slope of the mountain,” the Land Trust said in an online report. The asphalt path will measure 10 feet to 12 feet wide and provide road cyclists an uphill route that separates them from vehicle traffic on Bankhead Parkway. If users connect the Tollgate Greenway and the closed section of Bankhead Parkway, they’ll enjoy a route that’s at least 2.3 miles (one way) and connects the base of Monte Sano and the top of the mountain in the state park.
According to the Land Trust, the City of Huntsville has pledged $500,000 for the trail-building project, but another $500,000 must be raised to “make this project a reality.”
