The Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve includes seven trails measuring more than four miles.

Located in east Huntsville, near Highway 72, the Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve includes seven trails that total more than four miles. While the preserve is popular with hikers, it’s also open to mountain bikers and horseback riders. The paths that wind through the preserve explore mature woods with towering trees and stacks of boulders blanketed in bright moss. On your hike, you’ll encounter burbling streams and a spring where moonshiners secretly distilled their liquor under the cover of darkness.
Many of the paths are fairly level or not particularly steep, making them comfortable for most adults and children. A great path for kids is the Terry Trail, which takes you on a tour of nearly 50 tall, impressive trees identified by markers. (An online guided tour is also available.)
On the east side of the preserve, you’ll find one of its other unique features. The 18-hole Chapman Pines Disc Golf Course is set in a stand of tall loblolly pines. Circling the course is a wide, level path that’s perfect for anyone who wants to walk or run on easy terrain. Whether you
want to exercise in fresh air, enjoy a round of disc golf, or explore the wild woods, you’ll find what you’re seeking on Chapman Mountain.
