Monte Sano Nature Preserve

Updated: May 31, 2023

The Monte Sano Nature Preserve includes more than 23 miles of trails.

Located only about two miles from downtown Huntsville, the Monte Sano Nature Preserve covers more than 1,100 acres, making it one of the largest urban land preserves in the country.

The Land Trust of North Alabama manages the preserve, which includes more than 23 miles of public trails for hiking, biking, trail running, birding and many other outdoor pursuits. On any given day, you’ll see wildflower enthusiasts, outdoor photographers, dog walkers and folks getting their kids outdoors.

There are six trailheads located throughout this large preserve, which occupies portions of most slopes on Monte Sano Mountain. The multiple access points allow people to explore a wide variety of terrain and ecosystems. Along the low creek bottoms, you can stroll through a lush landscape that bursts with color as wildflowers bloom in spring. Higher on the mountain, waterfalls tumble from rocky bluffs, and paths wind through rugged stone hallways. On hilltops and high plateaus, rock outcrops offer lofty views of neighboring mountains and valleys.

Several trails also allow you to step back in time. On the Old Railroad Bed Trail, you’ll follow the route of a train that chugged its way up the mountain in the 1800s. At Three Caves, you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of a quarry where limestone was extracted in the 1940s and 1950s to build roads and bridges in the area. Whether you’re a history buff, a dedicated hiker, or someone who just wants to stroll in the fresh air, the Monte Sano Nature Preserve has just what you need, and you don’t have to go far to reach it.
