This 1.5-mile nature trail explores a 72-acre park and circles a 17-acre lake.
Looping around a lake atop Green Mountain, the Madison County Nature Trail is a popular destination for families. Open free to the public each day (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) from 7 a.m. until 30 minutes prior to sunset, the nature trail is a wide, well-marked, mostly level path that is perfect for kids, beginning hikers and people seeking comfortable terrain. Some parts of the trail are dirt, while some sections are gravel or pavement.
Completed in 1975, the 1.5-mile Nature Trail and several side trails run through a 72-acre park that includes restrooms, a covered pavilion, picnic tables, and drink vending machines. The centerpiece of the park is 17-acre Sky Lake, where fishing is allowed for kids under 16 and adults over 60.
As it circles through an attractive hardwood forest, the Nature Trail visits several interesting features, including a small A-frame chapel, a restored log cabin and a rustic covered bridge. Not far from the park entrance, side trails lead to a replica of a moonshine still.
With its high-quality trail system, historic structures and family-friendly amenities, the Madison County Nature Trail is the perfect place to educate and entertain kids or simply relax in the great outdoors.
