Cloudland Canyon State Park, Cherokee Falls

So, you’ve done several day hikes, but now you’d like to expand your horizons and try backpacking. What’s the next step?

How about joining a guided backpacking trip hosted by the Huntsville REI store? There are still a few slots open for REI’s backpacking class being held March 11-12 in Cloudland Canyon State Park in northwestern Georgia.

In its class description, REI states:

“On this overnight backpacking class at Cloudland Canyon, we'll explore tumultuous waterfalls and scenic overlooks while keeping an eye out for the critters that call this area home. We'll spend the night at a secluded campsite deep in the heart of the park. Along the way, we'll discuss the essentials of backpacking, setting up a proper campsite, loading a pack correctly, filtering water, campstove cooking techniques and offer insight into the region's history and ecosystem.”

REI adds that the trip is perfect for people who have some experience with day hiking, noting that participants should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain and carrying 35 pounds for two days.

If you don’t have a garage full of backpacking gear, don’t worry because REI will provide many of the essentials.

The cost for the trip is $319 for REI members and $349 for non-members. If you're interested, sign up quickly because additional Cloudland Canyon trips for March and April are sold out.
