About Huntsville Trails

HuntsvilleTrails.com is owned by Huntsville native Marcus Woolf, who launched the site in 2022 to educate people about local trails and inspire them to explore the outdoors.

Meet Marcus

Marcus Woolf was born and raised in Alabama, but a semester-long outdoor program at the Colorado Mountain College set his course for life. “After that I knew I wanted to do two things with my career—write and be outdoors,” he says. For nearly 30 years, Marcus has served as an editor for outdoor magazines and websites and worked as a freelance writer for national outdoor magazines like Backpacker and Outside. He is also the author of the hiking guidebook Afoot & Afield: Atlanta. Now, he’s taking his passion for writing and exploring nature and pouring it into guidebooks, trip reports, news stories and gear reviews for HuntsvilleTrails.com. When he’s not hiking Huntsville-area trails, he’s exploring the U.S. and international destinations with his wife, Wendy. In his free time, Marcus pursues his other passions, San Francisco Giants baseball and Alabama Football. “Roll Tide, y’all.” Reach him at marcus@huntsvilletrails.com.

Support Your Local Trails

The Huntsville metro area has a great number of high-quality trails because of the work of local organizations and volunteers. The Land Trust of North Alabama preserves land for recreation, and its employees and volunteers construct trails and maintain them diligently. Other groups, such as Huntsville Area Mountain Bike Riders (HAMR), also build and maintain paths for biking, hiking, trail running and other activities. To ensure a bight future for our trail systems, please support our local groups financially, or volunteer by participating in a trail work day.
